In each short, Samuel's portrayal of Dr. Vincent Kapoor is modeled after former astronaut and current NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. The shorts take place before and during the events in The Martian, showing how Vincent copes with the stress of his responsibilities as Bolden gives him advice about what to expect on his first space walk. Vincent Kapoor is the main protagonist of the series. He is portrayed by Samuel Hadida in all the shorts. He's a NASA astronaut serving on the first crew of NASA's Mars Mission, consisting of three other astronauts. He was selected based on his experience in pre-launch tests of the Ares I rocket, which was to launch them on their mission to Mars. He was chosen for this mission because he is one of few people who has actual experience with space travel through his pre-launch tests during Project Phoenix. He also suffers from extreme claustrophobia—and not just during spacewalks—and therefore needs his spacesuit pressurized before he ventures into space. Charles Bolden is the main antagonist of the series. He is portrayed by Samuel Hadida in all the shorts. Dr. Charles Bolden serves as NASA's Administrator and Commander of NASA, and is a former NASA astronaut with a very distinguished career. He handpicked Vincent Kapoor to be a member of the first crew of NASA's Mars Mission, but their relationship becomes strained after Kapoor's claustrophobia blooms at the beginning of his space walk. Dr. Robert Zubrin is portrayed by Alex Clarke in "Prepare for Impact". Dr. Robert Zubrin is an American scientist and aerospace engineer, best known for his work in the field of space colonization. Through his role as President of the Mars Society, he is the key figure behind the mission to colonize Mars. Dr. Zubrin prefers to be called "Zub." He often cites the 1997 film 1997 film "The Martian" as an inspiration for his interest in getting humans to Mars during his lifetime.
